TRACK TYPE

The Bobadilla-Algeciras railway line is an important piece of transport infrastructure in southern Spain.

Since it was built at the end of the 19th century, it has facilitated trade and the transport of goods between the interior of Andalusia and the port of Algeciras, and has been crucial to the economic development of the region and its links with the rest of Spain and Europe. Despite the improvements made throughout the 20th century to adapt to the needs of modern transport, investment was needed to renew the track, stations and infrastructure on the Ronda-Cortes de la Frontera line.

Description of works

The renovation ofthe single-tracksection, located next to the Guadiaro River and crossing the Grazalema Natural Park, consisted of modernising the line and adapting it to the passage of high-speed trains, allowing far international and lberian gauge traffic, using AM-05 mixed multigauge sleepers.

Much of the work was carried out during the night, without interrupting rail traffic.

Five stations were remodelled and their surroundings modernised to improve integration into the urban environment and to facilitate access for disabled people and people with reduced mobility.

The gauge of the existing tunnels was increased to allow for the installation of the overhead contact line by creating a recess at the bottom of the tunnel using a tunnel boring machine. To ensure the safety of the tunnels, the side walls were reinforced with micropiles. Two new underpasses were also built under the railway
line using hydraulic jacks, anda new structure was built for the new viaduct over the Guadiaro River.

Main achievements

  • lmprovement in quality and safety, reducing travel time by 20 minutes.
  • The work was influenced by the natural environment of the Alcornocales and Grazalema Park, where the biological shutdown periods were respected.

Sustainability

Environmental controls were important because a large part of the route crosses a reas classified as natural parks, which limit the opening of new accesses to the road. Archaeological monitoring was necessary, particularly at the cave of Cueva del Gato, a site of cultural interest.
