The Calafat-Vidin international bridge is a key road and rail link between Romania and Bulgaria, spanning the Danube as part of Pan-European Corridor IV from Dresden to lstanbul. lts construction, completed in 2013, was a challenging project that has improved connectivity and stimulated economic development in the Eastern European region. The construction of the Calafat -Vid in lnternational Bridge, is split into two construction sections: Railway Infrastructure The construction of a new 3.3 km single-track was carried out, extending from the end of the bridge on the Romanian bank of the Da nube to the existing Golenti-Calafat, including a new link to Calafat. In addition, the existing main and secondary lines were fully rehabilitated at the Golenti railway station. The section also involved the construction of electrical substations, catenary and railway signaling a long the entire length of the track, in accordance with the European ERTMS level 1 standard. Road Infrastructure This included the construction of approximately 8.7 km of road, mainly concentrated on the new access junction on the Romanian bank of the bridge. This section consisted of 3 km of highway, with two carriageways and two lanes in each direction. In addition, two viaducts, two overpasses and a toll station were built. One of the major challenges was the viaduct of the DN56 road, which consists of 13 double spans, one for each road, with a length of 26 m per span, using prefabricated beams of 1.03 m depth. Each deck was 18.5 m wide and approximately 344 m long. Another major challenge was the railway viaduct, with 11 spans of 26 m each, a cross section of 11.9 m wide and a total length of 290 m. During construction, important safety measures were implemented to avoid impacts on the Danuvio River (sediment barriers, physical barriers, river flood control).
