The renewal project for the Zafra–Huelva railway line modernises its infrastructure to improve safety, increase speed, and reduce travel times. The works included track replacement, turnout renewal, and upgrades to bridges, slopes, and drainage. This intervention enhances rail connections in  Western Huelva, particularly benefitting towns such as Jabugo, Calañas, and Gibraleón.

Description of the works

The comprehensive renewal of the Zafra–Huelva railway line covers two consecutive sections, totalling approximately 74 kilometres.

The works included the replacement of the track superstructure (rails, sleepers, and ballast), renewal of turnouts at key stations such as Calañas, Valdelamusa, and Gibraleón, and infrastructure upgrades such as slope protection, bridge repairs, and drainage renewal. These improvements make operations more efficient and safer, strengthening rail links between towns in the western part of the province of Huelva such as Jabugo, Calañas, Trigueros, and Gibraleón.

Section 1: 96+430 – Calañas

This section covers approximately 33 km in the province of Huelva, passing through Almonaster la Real, San Telmo, Cerro Andévalo, and Calañas, with a budget of €38.7 million.

Comprehensive renewal of the track superstructure was carried out, including new rails (60 E1 and 54 E1), PR-VE sleepers, type 1 ballast, and P1 and C1 track devices.

The project involved works at Valdelamusa station and stops such as Gil Márquez and Tamujoso, as well as the former Cerro Andévalo halt, along with upgrades to 8 level crossings and 8 tunnels.

Located in an area of high ecological value in the Sierra Morena, the project has significantly improved technical performance and rail connectivity between Jabugo and Calañas.

The works were awarded to the joint venture between Azvi S.A.U. and Martín Casillas S.L.U.

Section 2: Calañas – Peguerillas

This 41.2 km section crosses Calañas, Trigueros, and Gibraleón in the province of Huelva, with a budget of €38 million.

The general and siding track superstructure was completely renewed at Calañas and Gibraleón stations and included the installation of UIC60/54 E1 rail, PR-VE sleepers, and type 1 ballast, as well as turnout replacement and removal of disused tracks.

Infrastructure works included reinforcement and protection of cuttings and embankments, improvement of transverse and longitudinal drainage, and repair of four bridges.

Additional works included ballast-retaining walls, urban and anti-vandal fencing, and reinstatement of level crossings in their original locations.

The route remains largely unchanged, with slight modifications in plan and elevation, resulting in substantial improvements in the speed, reliability, and quality of the rail service.
