INTERMODALITY
Plaza España Central Station is an intermodal station that houses the main train and bus
stations, metro station, anda car park area.

The Plaza España intermodal station is the most important transport infrastructure in the city of Palma de Mallorca. Located in the center of the city, its construction was challenging dueto the urban environment in which it is located and the construction process required.
The station has reduced car journeys by 25% and has led to the creation of a large park in the heart of the city. The demolition of the original parking a rea included the relocation of overa thousand trees.

Main Challenges

  • The simultaneous construction ofthe park and station required a top-down construction approach, which was a major technical challenge that was overcome through the use of innovative construction methodologies.
  • Minimising the impact on the central Palma community.
  • The construction of the central railway and bus station without disrupting service.

Innovations

Top-down construction

lnstead ofthe usual construction process for an underground facility, a top-down construction approach was implemented. The Central Park of Mallorca had to be built on the slab that covers the Central Station, which allowed the simultaneous construction of the park and the station.

Reinforcement of the foundations of the pillars

Dueto the top-down construction, the soil under the base of the pillars was reinforced using jet grouting, which improved the strength of the soil and en su red the stability of the slab covering the station.

Special design of the pillars

Special metal devices were designed and installed inside the concrete slab to prevent the pillars from puncturing the slab, thus improving its strength.
