Description of works

The objective is to enable the circulation of passenger and freight services in standard gauge, thereby improving railway interoperability between Europe and the rest of the Mediterranean Corridor.

This project will integrate the Castellón–Vinaroz section into the European standard-gauge network, boosting the competitiveness of freight rail transport and improving passenger connections along the Mediterranean Corridor.

Main works

  • Adjustment of track geometry and the existing alignment.
  • Replacement of sleepers with polyvalent sleepers and localized ballast supply.
  • Maintenance of the existing rail in good condition.
  • Replacement of existing turnouts with polyvalent turnouts.
  • Construction of a new railway platform with associated earthworks and new safety sidings.
  • Review and adaptation of the existing drainage system, to match the new track configuration.
  • Adaptation and extension of platforms up to 200 m at all stops and stations.
  • In Vinaroz: construction of a new underpass and a new platform next to track 5, connected to the existing platforms.
  • Review and adaptation of the existing electrification (3 kV DC), including modification of spans on curves and use of existing cantilever equipment, except where new layout is required.
  • Gauge change for the adaptation of traffic to standard gauge (1,435 mm).
