lnaugurated on the 23rd of December 2007, the 179.6 km long Madrid – Segovia – Valladolid high-speed line, has significantly reduced the travel distan ce, thanks to the Saint Pedro and Guadarrama tunnels. The line has also reduced travel time between Madrid and Valladolid from 2 hours and 30 minutes to 53 minutes, travelling atan average speed of 203 km/h. The Soto del Real to Segovia section of the Madrid-Valladolid high-speed line involved the construction of railway infrastructure, extensive earthworks, formwork, transverse and longitudinal drainage works, overpasses and access roads. The four unique structures were built were the 147 m long viaduct over the Arroyo del Vadillo and the 136 m long Hontoria viaduct. In addition, the Fuentecilla tunnel of 1,021 m (116 m²) was excavated and a cut-and-cover tunnel of 227 m was built. The excavation of the tunnel presented difficulties due to the crossing of two 50 m faults. Given that the Sierra de Guadarrama enjoys special environmental protection, solutions were implemented in the design and construction of the high-speed line to minimise its environmental impact. Standard tunnels and cut-and-cover tunnels were chosen, and measures were taken to integrate the environmental considerations into the project and throughout the projects life, protecting the water system, fauna and wildlife. In addition, the reuse of materia Is was maximized, reusing 30% of the excavated material to manufacture concrete. Section: Soto del Real – Segovia
