Description

The Archidona Viaduct, part of the Andalusian Railway Axis on the Antequera-Granda High Speed Line, is a unique 3,150 m long work, the longest of its kind in Europe, and unprecedented in terms of hyperstatic span length (1,500 m), which is executed in two sections, although the structure was calculated and designed in its entirety, continuous and with no joints along its entire length.

Features and construction

  • The viaduct section built by Azvi is 2,575 m long and has a total of 53 spans.
  • The width of the deck is 14 m, identical to the rest of the platform. The deck was built with 63 spans, of which the two central spans are 65 m long, with 59 accompanying spans of 50 m and the abutment spans of 35 m.
  • The fixed point was achieved at pier no. 32, which is the central pier of the viaduct and differs from the others in that it has four shafts.
  • The rest of the piers were designed with two shafts joined by a lintel where the vertical and anti-seismic supports were placed.
  • The foundations of the viaduct required the construction of 7,200 m of concrete piles with a diameter of 2,000 m and up to 45 m in length.
  • The cross-section of the deck is a constant-edged double beam with a 2.9-metre thick steel girder.
  • Each span, or arch, that makes up the deck is 50 m long, 6.6 m wide and weighs approximately 190 tonnes.
  • Finally, the top slab was built using semi-stiff precast slabs in the negative sections close to the piers, and then reinforced and concreted until the full section was achieved; and in the span centre sections, the precast slabs were of full section.

The process was subject to extensive monitoring with the installation of complex technical equipment consisting of seismographs, rock deformation measuring equipment and auscultation instruments.
