Cantalobos tunnel is part of the A-7 Mediterráneo Highway, La Herradura-Taramay stretch, Granada. It is a 2,170 m long double tunnel, constructed by means of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The works for control and equipment systems were also carried out. These works, mainly consisted of the installation of SOS posts in emergency galleries, sound systems, pressurisation, emergency sign posts, intrusion detection systems, CCTV and control signalling concentrating systems. In addition, a mechanical ventilation system, a computerised smoke extractor system implementation, automatic and manual by sensors, and a sensorized cable fire detection system were installed. It is to be mentioned that 2 more tunnels were construted in the same road stretch, Calaceite tunnel, 410 m long, and Gato tunnel, 270 m long, using the same construction method and similar characteristic to Cantalobos tunnel. Cantalobos tunnel obtained in 2010 the best score in Spain and the second one to European level in the XII edition of the European Tunnel Assessment Programme (EuroTAP), after testing the safety requirements of 26 tunnels in 13 European countries. The tunnel, with 3,343 vehicles daily, achieved excellent results in all the categories evaluated (tunnel system, traffic and traffic surveillance, escape and rescue routes, fire protection, lighting and power supply, ventilation, incident management, etc.).
