Perforation of the railway access tunnel to Madrid-Barajas airport
The Minister of Public Works, José Blanco, the President of the Region of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, the Major of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, and the Government Representative in Madrid, Amparo Valcarce, attended, the last November 6th, to the perforation of the tunnel for the future railway line between Chamartín and the T4 in the Madrid-Barajas airport, that it is being built by the joint venture comprised of Azvi and Ferrovial.
The new layout is almost 9 km in length and it is divided in two sections. The first section is the quadruplication of Hortaleza’s double track outline, with an approximate length of 4.1 km, from the northern head of Chamartín station up to the junction with the M-40 highway, where the Manoteras station will be built to permit travellers to connect with the Light Train Line ML1 between Pinar de Chamartín and Las Tablas.
The second section consists of a new double track layout, undergrounded in its whole length (4.7 km) with the construction of the Valdebebas station being highlighted. The railway line will end in Barajas-T4 station.
The tunnel has been built using the Belgian method, performing its section with forward works each of 2.5 m long. With the perforation works, the excavation of the last advance of the tunnel has concluded and both ends at Chamartin and Valdebebas have finally joined.
The total investment in this project is 161.7 million Euros and the next year the railway line will be put into service.
