The basin of the new Lock in the Port of Sevilla stars to fill up
The process for filling up the basin of the new Lock started the last saturday. The Mayor of Sevilla, Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, and the President of the Port Authority, Manuel Jesús Fernández, assisted to the filling “symbolic” act.
In this act the pumping system was activated. It will be working during a week to fill up the basin with 250,000 cubic metres.
The next step after the filling is the laying of the four lock gates and the three bascule bridge and finishing with the river traffic diversion to the new lock. The present navigation channel will be fulled up in the parallel area to the lock.
The port infrastructure started to be built in September 2005, for the joint venture formed by Azvi, FCC and Sedra. It will replace the one constructed in 1949 and it will be put into operation in the first trimester of 2010 and it will permit the access to bigger ships because it is 35 meters wide opposite to the 24 meters wide of the present one.
